Après-coup, Freud’s Nachträglichkeit, is an essential psychoanalytic concept structuring each of four concepts, four mental processes that lie at the foundation of Freud’s thinking: psychic trauma, repression, the creation of the unconscious, and the creation of infantile sexuality. It is argued here that infantile sexual drives, in contrast to the self-preservative instincts, arise from a two-step process of translation and repression in which the residues of failed translation become source-objects of the drives. These residues of failed translation have an associative resonance with adult sexuality, and the child is driven to ongoing attempts to translate them, to make them meaningful après coup. Thus, après-coup is at the heart of the human subject as a sexual creature who requires, desires, and creates meaning.

Jonathan House, MD specialized in internal medicine but left his clinical practice to work full-time for the labor movement; after a decade, he returned to medicine re-specializing as a psychiatrist and then training as a psychoanalyst at Columbia where he is a TA and has taught widely, including 15 years as co-chair of the Freud course. Jonathan is also on the faculty of Columbia’s Institute for Comparative Literature and Society where he teaches graduate courses on Freud and on Laplanche in alternate semesters. Laplanche asked him to serve on the Conseil Scientifique of Fondation Laplanche where Jonathan oversees English translations. Jonathan is also the General Editor of The Unconscious in Translation, a new publishing house for whom, in addition to editorial work, Jonathan has translated and co-translated works by Laplanche including Freud and the Sexual, translated New Foundations for Psychoanalysis and Problématiques VI: Après-coup, and edited the other translations published by UIT Books.
Doris Silverman, PhD is a training, supervising, and teaching analyst at IPTAR. She is a faculty member and supervisor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. She is also a fellow, teacher, and supervisor at the International Psychoanalytic Association. She serves on the editorial boards of various psychoanalytic journals: Psychoanalytic Psychology, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, International Psychoanalytic Journal, Psychoanalytic Review, and Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Assn. She has co-authored the book, Changing Conceptions of Psychoanalysis: The Legacy of Merton M. Gill. Dr. Silverman has written extensively on a variety of psychoanalytic topics including infant research and its relevance for psychoanalysis, the attachment theory, gender, sexuality, and female development. She is the recipient of the Scientific Scholar Award of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2007.
Learning objectives:
1. To define and understand Laplanche’s General Theory of Seduction.
2. To describe and understand how the adult’s sexual unconscious is communicated to the child in an “enigmatic message.”
3. To describe the child’s struggle to translate repressed residues of the unconscious into meaningful relationships and content.
4. To understand clinically how the failure to translate unconscious content can be an ongoing source of frustration and longing as seen through the life and death drives.
