Note from the Brill Library at NYPSI

Dear Friends:

The Abraham A. Brill Library finds itself in a time of very real crisis.  The current state of the economy is hard on all nonprofit organizations, but perhaps few are hit as hard as analytic institutes.  As an independent educational facility and clinic, we belong only to the patients and pupils and the public whom we serve.

We are not alone in this exile; in this city, the White, IPTAR, NPAP, the New York Freudian Society along with others share this peculiar status, making of the psychoanalytic world a fragmented community.

Since 1947 the Abraham A. Brill Library has offered this disparate community a place to come together, and gather and share in the accumulated knowledge and discourse of analysis that is its currency. We welcome scholars from around the world, students and clinicians from everywhere in the New York, and are the one place the public can walk in off the street to learn about psychoanalysis.

Tonight we find ourselves facing serious financial challenges, which threaten our ability to provide the resources for research (including the city’s only psychoanalytic bookstore), education and community that we believe enrich us all.  This struggle is a matter of financial resources, not of passion or energy, but it is a struggle nonetheless.  It is without relish that we ask for your generosity and support, but we ask for it still, in the hope that you value as we do the Library’s services, the center for community it offers, and value especially this peculiar institution called psychoanalysis.
