East European Jewish Archive and Library Saved from
the Destruction of the Holocaust to be Reunited After 70 Years
Vilnius, Lithuania (September 23, 2014) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce the launch of The Vilna Project, a seven-year international project to preserve, digitize and virtually reunite YIVO’s prewar archives located in New York City and Vilnius, Lithuania, through a dedicated web portal. The Project will also digitally reconstruct the historic Strashun Library of Vilna, one of the great prewar libraries in Europe. Project partners are The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The Central State Archives of Lithuania and the National Library of Lithuania. Join us as as authors George Prochnik and Gideon Lewis-Kraus discuss Prochnik’s brilliant new biography of Stefan Zweig.
By the 1930s, Stefan Zweig had become the most widely translated living author in the world. His novels, short stories, and biographies were so compelling that they became instant best sellers. Zweig was also an intellectual and a lover of all the arts, high and low. Yet after Hitler’s rise to power, this celebrated writer who had dedicated so much energy to promoting international humanism plummeted, in a matter of a few years, into an increasingly isolated exile-from London to Bath to New York City, then Ossining, Rio, and finally Petrópolis-where, in 1942, in a cramped bungalow, he killed himself. In the early years of the 20th century German Lieder took on a new psychological and musical complexity: Gustav Mahler had a life-changing encounter with Sigmund Freud; Richard Strauss’s Ophelia-Lieder brought Shakespeare’s heroine into the analyst’s office; and German art song entered a new Golden Age fueled by dreams and hidden desires. This one act play, written by Julie Jaffee Nagel is a conversation between Mozart and Freud discussing Freud’s disclaimers about music and Mozart’s counterclaim that he could only express himself through music. These two icons engage in a lively discussion about their feelings regarding music and psychoanalysis. Specifically we learn about Mozart and some of the dynamics that contributed to his great piano Sonata, K 310 in A Minor.
