Optimistic or terrifying, the human societies of the future that Huxley, Orwell, H.G. Wells and Cormac McCarthy all predicted in books never seem to materialize. Technology continues at a rate that is dizzyingly fast by some measures—the advent of social media, for example—and monstrously slow in others (where are all those hydrogen-powered cars we keep being promised?)
