AMENDED APOLOGY STATEMENT

Full Apology to the Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian People, from Psychoanalysis for Social Responsibility, Section 9 of Division 39, the Division of Psychoanalysis, American Psychological Association

The United States is a settler colonial nation that grew wealthy, in part, by the theft and despoiling of Native American land and culture. The Standing Rock protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline is a movement resisting the further theft, loss and despoliation, which makes the present moment an important one in which to speak out against the longstanding harm afflicted on native peoples, including much psychological harm. As members of Psychoanalysis for Social Responsibility (Section 9 of the division of psychoanalysis, Division 39, of the American Psychological Association), we respectfully offer a full apology to Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians, and we stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock resistance movement. INFLAMMATORY RHETORIC BY A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IS DANGEROUS

We, the undersigned mental health professionals and psychoanalysts, believe that inflammatory rhetoric on the part of any United States Presidential candidate is dangerous and
psychologically unhealthy to the group process of our country. Vitriolic incitement to aggressive action by a public figure is likely to stir up those in our gun-filled culture who
are angry and psychologically prone to acting out in horrible ways.

A candidate who does not discourage but encourages outbursts such as “Lock her up,” “Kill her,” “Hang her” at his public rallies, who states that he wishes to “punch out” someone, Continue reading Division APA policy on political speech

Town Hall Question for Mr. Donald Trump by Daniel S. Benveniste

TrumpTownHall Mr. Trump, you tell it like it is. You are bold and audacious. You don’t go in for political correctness. You speak your mind. You are creating a movement around your authoritarian personality employing black and white thinking, simple solutions for complex problems and an intolerance of ambiguity. Your slogan speeches, bumper sticker discourses, shock jock politics, political bullying and reality show action figure posturing have seduced the press and unified the lowest common elements of the frustrated and the frightened. You rally support around bigotry, stoke the flames of fear and find Continue reading Town Hall Question for Mr. Donald Trump by Daniel S. Benveniste
