Rethinking Kishinev: How a Riot Changed 20th-Century Jewish History

Kishinev’s 1903 pogrom was the first event in Russian Jewish life to receive international attention. The riot, leaving 49 dead in an obscure border town, dominated the headlines of the western press for weeks, intruded on US-Russian relations, and had an impact on an astonishing array of institutions, such as the nascent Jewish army in Palestine, and the NAACP. It most likely also influenced Continue reading Yedies fun YIVO: News from YIVO

Jim Hall, Nelson Mandela, Freud & the social media from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear Colleagues,

As I send you this week’s post on the international psychoanalytic website, I am glad that on the eve of the first New England northeaster of the season, you will all have the chance to give your time to these interesting articles. I hesitate to say that the world events seem to have calmed down , except of course for the death of Nelson Mandela and Jim Hall. Possibly it is the season when humanity Islows down its rapid race of constructiveness vs. destructiveness.
As usual I will try not to repeat previous postings, and give you my choices followed by the entire index.

1) Please read Dr. Richard Rubens paper on psychoanalysis and the tragic sense of life – another way of looking at what we do.

Nelson Mandela, Winnicott, vs. Despair & Hatred from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear Colleagues,

It is perhaps fitting that on a day that the whole world mourns the passing of Nelson Mandela, we should be reading the posts on our international psychoanalytic website. Clearly we are trying to reach the whole world and, though this is not explicitly stated in the “goals” of psychoanalysis, we are obviously trying to make the world a better more mature, accepting, egalitarian place in the true humanistic sense. Curiously, as the holidays approach as well it occurs to me that even in wartime, both sides generally ceasefire on Christmas Day.

Before I list my choices for this week I would like to remind you to please consider a donation to InternationalPsychoanalysis.net. Though it is a labor of love on everyone’s part, there are still costs and labor associated with it. Continue reading Nelson Mandela, Winnicott, vs. Despair & Hatred from Sasha Rolde on IP.net
