APA woes, internet addiction, Marg.Atwood, Pluto, HIPA from Sasha Rolde

Dear Colleagues,

On the eve of the IPA Congress in Boston, I know that you are preparing yourselves for the trip and may not have the time to read all the posts on the international psychoanalytic website this weekend, so please bring your laptops and read while you are en route or here. We hope that the richness of the website will supplement your experience at the meetings. Historic events are occurring around the globe with Iran, Greece, China and in the USA where the president is visiting prisons. Change is in the air. Be part of it.

My choices on the website are:

1) Apparently joining the list of otherwise famous with Heidegger is the architect
Le Corbusier as a Fascist. Obviously one’s talents do not necessarily coincide with one’s political ideology.

Capital punishment, life & death, LGBT, empathy, fact resistant humans from Sasha Rolde

Dear Colleagues:

Adding to our ongoing discussion of torture, violence and killing as we read and listen to last week to Robert J. Lifton, the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the self admitted Boston Marathon bomber, came to an end this week with a death sentence. As it dominated the news here, a discussion of capital punishment is ubiquitous. To me it seems counterintuitive as human beings seems to be waging war on an almost constant basis without much regard to to life and killing many. With this in mind, I will try to find some posts that may be relevant, but perhaps you will find others that appeal to your interests.
As usual I will list may preferences followed by the full menu.
My choices are as follows:

1) The March 2016:***The Courage to Fight Violence Against Women*** COWAP Conference is clearly in forefront of our discussions against violence and I recommend attending it. Continue reading Capital punishment, life & death, LGBT, empathy, fact resistant humans from Sasha Rolde

Winnicott’s Style At Après-Coup

Après-Coup PSYCHOANALYTIC ASSOCIATION
Friday, March 20, 2015
6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

WINNICOTT’S STYLE: BETWEEN THE CLINIC AND TRANSMISSION

PART II: CLINICAL STYLE IN EXTENSION, Foundations of Psychoanalysis

For D.W. Winnicott, clinical work requires inventing an analytic style that responds to the singularity of the analysand—as Freud recommended. We will first examine how Winicott’s style was shaped by his reaction to the styles of his own analysts (Strachey, Riviere); and then, how his dissemination of his own style in public talks and writings met the impasse of trying to transmit an analytic theory that eschewed theories.

SUGGESTED READINGS: D.W. Winnicott, “Hate in the Counter transference” (1947), “Clinical Varieties of Transference” (1955), in Through Paedriatrics to Psychoanalysis: Collected Papers (Basic Books).

MEETING PLACE: The School of Visual Arts, 136 West 21st Street (between Sixth and Seventh Avenues), New York City. Please ask at the front desk for the room number.

ATTENDANCE FEE: $20. For students with ID: $10.  Attendance is free for all members of Après-Coup as well as for the faculty and students of the School of Visual Art

Aging, childhood, Hitler, 9/ 11, Einstein, Freud and War from Sasha Rolde

The world political landscape this week is concerned with inclusion and acceptance (contract with Syria, refugees, new contenders for US presidency) our psychoanalytic societies struggle with similar issues, and our website this week attempts to be all inclusive as do I in my choices as usual followed by the full week’s menu of posts:
