Early Registration: Who is My Mother, Who is My Father, Who am I? Conference

Early Registration available until September 15th.

Regular and IPA Members: $150.00

Candidates $75.00

The conference is sponsored by The Committee on Women in Psychoanalysis, which is a committee of the International Psychoanalytical Association. Our committee has sponsored meetings in Portugal, Italy, Spain, England, Mexico, Brazil, Scandinavia and Argentina. as well as France and Germany. This is our second meeting in the United States, the first being in Atlanta. Our aims are to give modern feminist thinking a place in psychoanalysis and to give psychoanalytic thinking a place in the feminist world. This New York Conference gives attendees the opportunity to join a community of parents who have children of a race other than their own and parents who have children of mixed racial heritage and those considering such options a chance to hear from people who have been adopted by people of another race and those of mixed heritage about what their experience means to them. This is a unique opportunity to consider the effects of our thinking on how we raise our children and on how to counsel parents raising children in the new world that they live in now. Come and be a part of the future of parenting. We look forward to welcoming you.

*Invitation to Submit Opinion Pieces*

Arnie Richards, our Editor-In-Chief, has been hard at work rounding up topic and regional editors in addition to the at-large commentators. (See the Masthead page for a complete list.) As the newly appointed Op-Ed editor I hope to facilitate a lively and informative dialogue.

The typical two-page newspaper spread of Editorials, Letters to the Editor, and Op-Ed essays does not translate literally to the online world of blogging, but here’s what we have in mind. In the blogosphere, Letters to the Editor are replaced by Comments, and comments can continue long after the original posting is made. Remember Yale Kramer’s April 27th “Special Report: Thirty-Three Dead”? 103 comments have been posted on that piece, the latest one on July 17th.

We want to foster more conversations on the widest possible range of subjects as they relate to our field. Because InternationalPsyhoanalysis.net is more of a group blog, “editorials” — defined simply as opinion pieces – will reflect only the opinion of the author. Editorials and op-ed pieces are therefore one in the same. This is your invitation to share your thoughts. All opinions and ideas are welcome and the process is simple — just email your editorials to me (click on the Contact Us page if you’d like to use the email form provided) and I’ll take care of posting them to the blog.

Blog News

Announcing two new features at InternationalPsychoanalysis.net

The first is conceptual — we call it our blogs-within-a-blog. Several commentators have stepped up as editors for posts relating to:

psychoanalysis and movies — Herbert H. Stein and Anita Katz (co-editors)
psychoanalysis and art — Danielle Knafo
psychoanalysis and music — Julie Jaffee Nagel
psychoanalysis and books — Joseph Reppen

These editors will be post their own pieces as well as pieces submitted by you. If you’d like to submit a piece for posting, please send it via email to Tamar Schwartz and include the editor’s name in the subject line.

Book Mark Our Book Mart: The second new feature is our Book Mart, accessible from the link on the horizontal menu (a/k/a dashboard) up top. To start off, Book Mart will feature a short list of recommended books at discounted prices, but we hope that the list will grow to include more titles and even some journals. In addition, we can get for you titles from IUP that are not available anywhere else. Tamar Schwartz can take your credit card order via email or telephone.

Another blog you might find of interest

Dr. Richards has asked me to bring to your attention a blog he found of interest. Psyche, Science, and Society — Blog of Stephen Soldz: Psychoanalyst, Psychologist, Researcher, and Activist. One of Soldz’ recent postings features a video: “Obedience, the classic film on the Milgram experiments on obedience to authority.”

To find Soldz’ blog easily in the future (after it scrolls off our main page here) I have added it to the quick links down the left sidebar, under the “Blogs” heading. I have also added a link directly to the Google site hosting the video on the static page currently called Media that you can access by clicking on the Media button on the horizontal menu bar (a/k/a dashboard) toward the top of our blog.

What’s What, and Where

We are continually trying to improve on the functionality of the website and create a consistent structure so that you can easily find items of interest. In addition to commentary in the form of blog posts, you will also find blog postings about meetings, publications and such. Each posting is assigned to one or more categories, and the categories box toward the top left of your screen allows you to filter the front page to display blog posts from only a selected catagory. Because posts so quickly scroll off the page of a busy blog, we have also created a number of static pages that you may access from the menu buttons near the top of the page. Here is a brief description of what you will find on each of those pages. Continue reading What’s What, and Where

Empathy

Empathy — The ability to imagine oneself in another’s place and understand the other’s feelings, desires, ideas and actions. So simple, and yet so enigmatic! The development of empathy, the limitations of empathy, the influence of theory on empathy, and the role of culture in the determination and use of empathy were the four panel topics addressed at the Empathy Symposium on March 3 and 4, 2007, culminating with a final discussion by Glen Gabbard. Posted here at InternationalPsychpoanalysis.net are selected streaming audio files from that conference.
