Robert Michels, MD is the recipient of Sigmund Freud Award for 2009

The American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians is pleased to announce that Robert Michels, MD is the recipient of its Sigmund Freud Award for 2009.  Previous award winners include Charles Brenner, Arnold Richards, Otto Kernberg, Glen Gabbard and most recently from our Psychiatry Department at MSMC, Hillel Swiller and Louis Linn.

Dr. Michels is internationally recognized as a leader in psychiatry and psychoanalysis.  He is Walsh McDermott University Professor of Medicine at Cornell University and University Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College.  He served as Dean of Cornell University Medical College and Provost for Medical Affairs.  For seventeen years, he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College, and Psychiatrist-in-Chief of the New York Hospital Payne Whitney Clinic.    

Among many accomplishments, Dr. Michels is a past President of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, past President of the American College of Psychiatrists, and a former member of the Board on Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine.  He is also a training analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.   Dr. Michels is the author of more than 300 scientific articles.  He is Joint Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, Deputy Editor of The American Journal of Psychiatry, and a member of several other editorial boards.
