Overview
The case to be presented is from a 15 year mostly three times a week analysis of a substantially traumatized patient beginning at age 4 and including both parents. The focus of the presentation following some background will be on the degree and kind of change and the possible basis for the patient’s marked improvement. Factors associated with the progress in comparison with other mostly less improved patients will be considered.

An earlier version of the case was published in 2011 by Karnac, chapter 4 of A New Freudian Synthesis: Clinical Process in the Next Generation edited by Andrew Druck, Carolyn Ellman, Norbert Freedman and Aaron Thaler. Previous information about the case is not necessary to follow the presentation.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this presentation, the participant will have:

1. A clearer idea of what constitutes overwhelming emotional experience at the brink of breakdown and how that experience is Described by the patient when at a safer distance from the tipping point.

2. A better understanding of what factors played a role in the unusual degree of improvement by this patient as compared with others who have also experienced substantial psychic trauma in childhood.

Presenter: Marvin Hurvich, PhD, is a training and supervising Analyst at the New York Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) and The Contemporary Freudian Society.
