Treating the “Whole Person”:
What Happens when a College Attempts to Integrate its Health and Counseling Services?
Hillary Clinton’s mental health platform included the following: Integrate the nation’s mental and physical health care systems so that health care delivery focuses on the “whole person.” This presentation explores the organizational challenges colleges face in this integrative effort.
Topics include:
1) The System-in-the-Mind among leadership and staff,
2) Social defenses throughout the system, and
3) Transference dilemmas faced by the consulting team.
Teaching and Learning Method
Case Presentation and Discussion
Learning Objectives:
Participants will gain an understanding of:
– The system-in-the-mind and forms of social defense in the context of college-initiated integration of health and counseling services
– The demands on leadership, especially in terms of task articulation, boundary management and authority relations
– Transference to the consulting team and how it relates to both content and process expertise
Jerry Fromm is Senior Consultant to the Erikson Institute for Education and Research at the Austen Riggs Center. Former Director of the Institute, he began an organizational consulting service for the local community and directed an annual working conference for regional counseling services. He has taught at, and consulted to, a number of psychoanalytic institutes across the United States, and is a partner in College Health and Counseling Service Consulting, LLC. He is both a past President of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations and the Center for the Study of Groups and Social Systems in Boston. Jerry has directed or served on the staff of Group Relations Conferences in the US, Canada, Europe and Israel. Currently, he serves as President of the International Dialogue Initiative, an interdisciplinary group that studies the psychodynamics of societal conflict. An author and editor of four books, he has also written many journal articles. Jerry can be contacted at gerard.fromm@austenriggs.net.

(3.5) CE credits will be granted to participants who have registered, have documented evidence of attendance of the entire program and have completed the on-line evaluation form. Upon completion of the evaluation form a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to all participants who comply with these requirements. CE Administrative Fee: $25 Payable at the event.
The Case Conference Series consists of presentations of applied material from an organizational consultation, executive coaching engagement, or presentation relevant to systems-psychodynamic thinking and practice.
