PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION: TREATMENT AND ITS COMPLICATIONS

Treatment during a patient’s pregnancy can prove quite challenging as the new mother has to meet the biological, psychological and environmental demands of an expected or newborn baby. In some mothers who have experienced a lack of good-enough care from their own mothers and have internalized a bad parental object, there is a powerfulresistance that can result in the patient abandoning the treatment. Women who have a history of abandonment by one or both of the parents, may repeat this experience in the transference, prematurely terminating the treatment. In other cases, where there has been a more subtle abandonment–- that of having been inadequately cared for by the parents, creating a negative and conflict ridden relationship, issues with aggression may arise with strong force: The new mother’s resentment of her own parents compounded with envy of her baby, compels her to abandon the therapist and/or terminate the treatment in order to protect him/her from her aggressive and harmful feelings. This presentation will reflect upon the consequences and the helplessness in the countertransference that often emerges with post-partum patients. The therapist may experience a sense of failure when an expectant mother isn’t attuned and present for her baby and/or when the baby’s parents are unable to provide good enough care and containment. The sense of abandonment is then repeated from mother to child, patient to therapist. Emphasized will be the struggles in trying to help depressed women at their most fragile time as well as a woman’s potential difficulties in utilizing and accepting help.
Learning objectives
Participants will: 1) learn the main symptoms and dynamic issues underlying postpartum depression, 2) identify difficulties and factors that may interfere with the treatment, 3) learn psychoanalytically informed techniques in the treatment of postpartum depression.

The New York State Education Department has approved this workshop for 3 contact hours (CEUs) for LMSWs, LCSWs and LPs. A certificate will be emailed upon request to those who sign the attendance sheet at the end of the workshop, complete an evaluation and pay an administrative fee of $15. There is no charge for those affiliated with MITPP, MCMH or MSPP.

MITPP, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,100 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
The application deadline for the Fall 2017 semester is July 15, 2017.
