Borderline Personality Disorder and Impaired Emotional Interoception
Dr. New will review the evidence that borderline personality disorder is substantially heritable. She will make an argument that emotional interoception is the core in this illness and relate this to the nature of effective psychotherapies for this disorder.
Antonia S. New, M.D. is Vice Chair for Education and Residency Training Director in Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. A graduate of Swarthmore College, Dr. New completed her medical training at Weill Cornell Medical College and her residency training in Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic. She has been on faculty at Mount Sinai for 23 years focusing predominantly on study the phenomenology, neurobiology and novel therapeutics of borderline personality disorder. She has been continuously funded through the National Institutes of Mental Health, the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense and has published more than 100 peer reviewed articles. She is a valued educator and was honored by the Institute of Medical Education at Mount Sinai with the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.
