A CLINICAL WORKSHOP: PHENOMENOLOGY AND DYNAMICS OF CHILDHOOD TRAUMA:
PHASES OF RESPONSE AS A MAP TO CLINICAL INTERVENTIONS
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2016, PRESENTER: STEVEN MARANS, Ph.D., MSW
Dr. Marans, a child and adult psychoanalyst, will discuss the experience of over 25 years of responding to children and families who have been impacted by potentially traumatic, violent events. The phenomena and dynamics of the traumatic experience will be reviewed in the context of acute, peri-traumatic and longer-term phases of response. Dr. Marans will present findings and clinical material that have emerged from: 1) acute interventions of the Child Development-Community Policing Program, a collaborative response to violence by police and mental health professionals; 2) peri-traumatic implementation of the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention, an evidence-based, early intervention; and, 3) longer-term cases seen in both structured and unstructured psychotherapy approaches with children and adults. Additionally, Dr. Marans will discuss ways in which the impact of traumatic events on mental health clinicians can interfere with provision of optimal clinical care. Individual cases and mass casualty events will be used to illustrate ways in which clinicians can better take care of themselves as they respond to those traumatized by events that may be highly distressing for all.
Learning objectives
1. Participants will have an appreciation for the phenomenology and psychodynamics of traumatic experience and the differing phases of response.
2. Participants will have an appreciation for conceptual basis for models of clinical response to acute and peri-traumatic phases developed at the Yale Child Study Center.
3. Participants will have an appreciation for psychodynamics of both structured and unstructured approaches to longer-term impact of trauma when there has been an earlier failure of recovery.
STEVEN MARANS, PH.D., MSW, is Director of the Childhood Violent Trauma Center at The Yale Child Study Center and Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry and Professor of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine. He is on the faculty of the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis and recently served as a member of US Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence.

The New York State Education Department has approved this workshop for 3 contact hours (CEUs) for LMSWs and LCSWs. A certificate will be emailed upon request to those who sign the attendance sheet at the end of the workshop, complete an evaluation and pay an administrative fee of $15. There is no charge for those affiliated with MITPP, MCMH or MSPP.

MITPP, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and a program leading to the New York State license in Psychoanalysis. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. Truly affordable training: Low tuition of $1,100 per semester includes both individual and group supervision and up to three courses. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
