Topic: trauma and creativity (therapeutic action of the creative process)
Contact Hours: 4

Presenters: Spyros D. Orfanos, Ph.D., ABPP; Psychologist/psychoanalyst in independent practice; Clinic Director at NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.

Sophia Richman, Ph.D., ABPP; Psychologist/psychoanalyst in independent practice; Supervisor/Consultant at NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.

This multi-media presentation will address trauma and the creative process. The presenters will overview psychoanalytic theories of creativity and offer a new relational perspective on the creative process with dissociation and witnessing as core concepts. Current trauma theory as it applies to survivors of massive psychic trauma will be discussed and challenged. It will be shown that there is a tendency towards pathological formulations, sweeping generalization, and dichotomous thinking.

Case examples, both clinical and applied, will highlight the discrepancy between theory and lived experience and illustrate how art can be used in the service of healing, mourning and memorialization. The creations of artists and patients in the form of drawing, photography, and music will be featured and a film will be shown. Throughout there will be opportunity for group discussion.

Teaching Methods: Lecture, film, video clips, group discussion

Learning Objectives: At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

a. Identify and compare three major psychoanalytic concepts of creativity

b. Explain the new relational theory of the creative process and its therapeutic action

c. Describe prevailing faulty generalizations about massive psychic trauma

d. Understand the nature of creative blocks and the inability to use the creative process for healing.
