In the transference, the patient unconsciously identifies the analyst with what he has projected into him, creating what Strachey called an external phantasy object. In the intimate rapport of the analytic session, the analyst tends to identify with these projections as well, which brings him into a relationship with the patient that complements the patient’s transference relationship
with him. The analyst’s identification with the patient’s projections is a type of pathology of his receptivity to the patient that is exacerbated by the patient’s skill at producing states of mind in the analyst with which the analyst is supposed to identify. The analyst’s recovery from this — her ability to distance herself from the patient’s projections and therefore to interpret them — depends on her having links to her internal objects that survive the patient’s projections and unconscious manipulations. Interpretations make the patient aware simultaneously that he and the analyst are separate and that the analyst has a link to internal objects that are not under the patient’s control. The latter is a rudimentary oedipal situation. These two ‘awarenesses’ are really the same, which means that working through the depressive position and working through the oedipal situation are fundamentally the same thing.
Robert Caper, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, and has lectured in psychoanalytic institutes in the U.S., Britain, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and Australia. He is the author of over 25 psychoanalytic articles and three books: Immaterial Facts (Aronson, 1988 and Routledge, 2000), A Mind of One’s Own (Routledge, 2000) and Building Out in the Dark (Routledge, 2009). He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, the IPA Committee on Psychoanalytic Education and the IPA Committee on Inter-Regional Conferences. He has worked with a number of British analyst, including Wilfred Bion, Donald Meltzer, Hanna Segal, Betty Joseph, Herbert Rosenfeld, and Edna O”Shaughnessey. He is currently teaching and practicing psychoanalysis in New York City and in Vermont.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:
1. Explain the role of projection in the formation of transference
2. Describe the role of the analyst’s “countertransference illness” in the analytic process.
3. Express how the analyst’s working through this “countertransference illness” confronts the patient with an Oedipal situation in the analysis, giving him the opportunity to work through it and thereby to achieve a mind of his own.
