Translating Object Relations Concepts into Practice with Couples: A Two Part Workshop Series (or one workshop)
Presenter: Judith Siegel, PhD, LCSW
Part I This workshop will focus on the concepts of projective identification and splitting, and examine how they emerge in the couple’s dynamics. We will then examine the ways that the therapist can intervene in the session, engage both parties in examining their relationship from a new perspective, and create changes in the ways that partners relate to each other. The workshop will also consider the therapist’s use of self in conducting the therapy session.
Part II This workshop examines how the relational past influences and unfolds in the couple’s intimate relationship. Neuroscience research has highlighted the importance of emotional memory networks that are stimulated in the process of assigning meaning to current events. In this way, former relationship experiences of self and other are triggered and incorporated into the here-and-now. This workshop will examine the techniques and interventions that the couple therapists can use in helping the couple defuse emotional intensity, and acquire a more thoughtful response that helps them challenge the power of the past. The therapist’s use of self in translating emotions will be discussed.

Understanding Emotional Communication and Countertransference in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Presenter: Paul Geltner, DSW, LCSW
The course will discuss how to identify and understand emotional communications from the patient to the therapist through the analysis of the therapist’s countertransference. Attendees will understand the concept of emotional communication, its role in psychotherapy and its relationship to the fundamental concepts of psychodynamic practice: unconscious repetition, transference, and countertransference. They will be able to differentiate feelings that can be used to understand the patient from feelings that are related to their subjective reactions to the patient. This will involve an in-depth examination of the four major types of countertransference states: narcissistic; object; anaclitic and projective identification. The aspects of the analytic relationship that are non-transference, and are anchored in the present will also be considered.

Psychopharmacology for Psychotherapists
Presenter: Jeffrey Rubin, MD
The goal of this workshop series is to increase the level of confidence of LMSW and LCSW practitioners in discussing medication issues with their clients and to facilitate well-informed communication between them and the psychiatrist involved in their clients’ care. LMSW and LCSW practitioners will gain an understanding of how and when to refer clients for psychopharmacological evaluation and will gain some basic understanding of principles of psychopharmacology and of the commonly used psychotropic medications their clients are likely to be prescribed by a psychiatrist. Psychodynamic and practical issues related to the collaborative treatment process and the giving and receiving of psychiatric medications will be integral to the course.
On completion of the course participants should have a basic understanding of how and when to refer patients for psychopharmacological evaluation. They will also understand some of the principles governing such an evaluation and its ongoing management. They will have learned the names and basic characteristics of some of the medications their patients are likely to be prescribed as well as sources for more information about them. They should feel some increased level of confidence in discussing medication issues with their patients and with the psychiatrists treating them.
