WORKSHOP ON CHILD ANALYSIS
Psychoanalysis in the Institution: L’École Expérimentale de Bonneuil-sur-Marne with Catherine Vanier
Saturday, April 2, 2016 10:30 am – 2:00 pm

The School of Visual Arts 136 West 21st Street, New York, NY

In 1969 Maud Mannoni founded a residence for autistic, psychotic and gravely neurotic youth deemed unfit for normal schooling. This innovative, psychoanalytically oriented “Place for Living” still exists: videos documenting activities and clinical methodologies will help us understand how, in the context of France’s current mental health policies, the École Expérimentale offers alternatives to the traditional handling of autism and psychosis.

Suggested Readings: Maud Mannoni: The Child, His “Illness,” and the Others (translation, 1970; French ed. 1967); Le psychiatre, son “ fou” et la psychanalyse (1970).

Catherine Mathelin Vanier is a psychoanalyst practicing in Paris and a member and past president of Espace Analytique. Her books include Lacanian Psychotherapy with Children: The Broken Piano; Premature Birth: The Baby, The Doctor and The Psychoanalyst and the recent Autisme, comment rendre les parents fous? She also works in neonatal intensive care, as associate researcher at the Research Center for Psychoanalysis, Medicine, and Society of the U. of Paris Diderot–Paris 7, heads L’École Expérimentale de Bonneuil-sur-Marne, and is an Après-Coup faculty member.

Attendance fee: $50; for students with ID: $20
Attendance is free for members of Après-Coup as well as for the
faculty and students of the School of Visual Arts.
