Social Media 101 for Mental Health Professionals

This workshop will provide a basic overview of social media and its implications on mental health professions. Participants will be provided with instruction on using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. This workshop will also help participants identify ethical ways to use social media to enhance their practices. Finally, the workshop will conclude with a guided discussion on clinical perspectives for using social media in mental health practices.
Kimberly L.B. Grocher, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker and has a faculty appointment at the Weill Cornell Medical College. She maintains a group practice at the Weill Cornell Psychiatry Specialty Center where she specializes in treating couples and adults with Mood, Anxiety, and Trauma related disorders. Mrs. Grocher holds an M.S.W. from Howard University in Washington D.C., an M.A. in Media Studies with a certificate in Media Management from The New School in New York City, and a B.S. in Psychology from Towson University in Baltimore, MD. Kimberly completed two years of post-graduate training in Psychodynamic Couples Therapy at the Training Institute for Mental Health in New York City. She has also received training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Problem Solving Therapy, The Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
Mrs. Grocher has provided social and therapeutic services in a variety of settings, including subacute/long term care facilities, inpatient and outpatient mental health/substance abuse settings, employee assistance programs in corporate environments, and in private practice. She is an adjunct professor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service where she is currently pursuing her Ph.D. Mrs. Grocher incorporates her diverse background in media and social work to research and create media for the mental health field.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:
Explain how Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Goodle+ can be used in a mental health practice.
Differentiate between ethical and unethical use of social media in a mental health practice.
Discuss the clinical implications and complications of using social media in their practice and profession.
Continuing Education Contact Hours:
Social Workers: The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 2 CE credits.
Psychologists: The Contemporary Freudian Society is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Contemporary Freudian Society maintains responsibility for this program and its content. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and evaluation form, participants will be granted 2 CE credits.
Professional Counselors: The Boards of Professional Counselors in the District of Columbia and Virginia will accept continuing education credits for Counselors attending a program offered by an APA-authorized sponsor, provided they comply with the requirements stated above for psychologists. The Board of Professional Counselors in Maryland will accept CE credits granted by a program that is recognized by the Maryland Board of Examiners for Psychologists and Social Workers.
Who Should Attend:
The instructional level for this activity is advanced. Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g. LPs, LCATs, and pastoral counselors) and those with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications.
