The title, taken from Shakespeare’s description of his own acting, “my nature is subdued to what it works in, like the dyer’s hand,” opens a discussion of how and how much we put our minds and ourselves at our patients’ disposal, as participants rather than as external interpreters. Using a clinical illustration to introduce the discourse, the paper considers the aims and consequences of the analyst’s non-interpretive actions as well as interpretations. Competing technical approaches require the analyst’s judgment to be guided by truthfulness, commitment to the patient’s welfare, regard for countertransference, and ethical considerations. How far to go with action cannot be a settled question, but the essential requirement of limitations in the analytic relationship and the danger of boundary violations must be kept in mind.
Dr. Anton Kris, who is a Professor of Psychiatry, part -time, at Harvard Medical School, has been a psychiatrist for 55 years, a psychoanalyst for over 45 years, and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute for over 35 years. He is the author of Free Association: Method and Process and numerous papers. Dr. Kris has served on the editorial boards of several of the major psychoanalytic journals and is currently the Chair of the Monitoring and Advisory Board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He has also served on the board of trustees of The Anna Freud Centre, The Anna Freud Foundation, and the Sigmund Freud Archives, of which he was Executive Director in 2014. He received the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society. He regards himself as more a teacher than an innovator.
