Does Containment Produce Psychological Growth?

This paper presentation explores the meaning of containment in psychoanalysis. It begins by delineating the components of containment, namely projection and introjection and their relationship to communication, and to unconscious fantasy in the psychoanalytic session. The author then goes on to discuss the model of the Container and the Contained proposed by Wilfred Bion, and suggests that this is not an adequate model for the kind of psychological growth that occurs in psychoanalysis. For psychoanalytic development, the analysis must foster the capacity for what might be called self-containment. He describes the features of self-containment, showing how it is both similar to and different from containment. He concludes with a discussion of psychological development that occurs spontaneously during normal development, and that differs from the results fostered by non-psychoanalytic therapies.
Robert Caper, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, and has lectured in psychoanalytic institutes in the U.S., Britain, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and Australia. He is the author of over 25 psychoanalytic articles and three books: Immaterial Facts (Aronson, 1988 and Routledge, 2000), A Mind of One’s Own (Routledge, 2000) and Building Out in the Dark (Routledge, 2009). He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, the IPA Committee on Psychoanalytic Education and the IPA Committee on Inter-Regional Conferences. He has worked with a number of British analyst, including Wilfred Bion, Donald Meltzer, Hanna Segal, Betty Joseph, Herbert Rosenfeld, and Edna O”Shaughnessey. He is currently teaching and practicing psychoanalysis in New York City and in Vermont.

It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 5 CE credits.
Professional Counselors: The Boards of Professional Counselors in the District of Columbia and Virginia will accept continuing education credits for Counselors attending a program offered by an APA-authorized sponsor, provided they comply with the requirements stated above for psychologists. The Board of Professional Counselors in Maryland will accept CE credits granted by a program that is recognized by the Maryland Board of Examiners for Psychologists and Social Workers.
