APA woes, internet addiction, Marg.Atwood, Pluto, HIPA from Sasha Rolde

Dear Colleagues,

On the eve of the IPA Congress in Boston, I know that you are preparing yourselves for the trip and may not have the time to read all the posts on the international psychoanalytic website this weekend, so please bring your laptops and read while you are en route or here. We hope that the richness of the website will supplement your experience at the meetings. Historic events are occurring around the globe with Iran, Greece, China and in the USA where the president is visiting prisons. Change is in the air. Be part of it.

My choices on the website are:

1) Apparently joining the list of otherwise famous with Heidegger is the architect
Le Corbusier as a Fascist. Obviously one’s talents do not necessarily coincide with one’s political ideology.

2) And who decides that books should be published. Is the author in the know? What if it is a book that was found in a back drawer from long ago when you are post -stroke and can’t hear or see and several people say you are “delighted.”

4) Beware of misinterpretation of HIPA

5) To the article about internet addiction for teenagers I might add the problems with electronics in children from practically birth.

In unmistakable terms, the long-awaited Hoffman Report has confirmed longstanding allegations that the American Psychological Association (APA) curried favor with the US Department of Defense (DoD) by colluding to preserve unethical detention and interrogation practices *** practices that involved psychologists in torture and abuse. The lengthy and detailed report delineates how APA staff and prominent Association leaders deceived and subverted the will of the membership to adopt and maintain ethics rules for psychologists ***that were as closely aligned as possible with DoD policies, guidelines, practices, or preferences, as articulated to APA by these DoD officials.*** These ***highly permissive*** ethics policies, the report unequivocally concludes, were ***based on strategy and PR, not ethics analysis.***
