“Identification, Introjection, Projection, and Projective Identification: Early Papers”

Four-Session Program Beginning September 11, 2015 1:00 – 2:30pm
In this four week program we will explore the early and foundational papers written in England in the early 1940’s that extend Freud’s ideas on introjection and identification. This will lead us into the early papers on projective identification. The following papers will be read. This list is our beginning point; one or two others may be included.

– Heimann, P. Some Aspects of the Role of Introjection and Projection in Early Development, in King and Steiner (1991) Controversial Discussions
– Heimann, P. (1942) A Contribution to the Problem of Sublimation and Its Relation to the Processes of Internalization, IJP.
– Klein, M. (1946) Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms
Phillida Rosnick, PhD is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, and former Institute Director of the CFS. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst and on the Faculty at the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society. She is also in private practice in New York City and works with Adults.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:
Define and differentiate, on from the other, the concepts of identification, introjection, projection, and projective identification.
Discuss similarities to Freud’s work on identification and introjection and projection. Be able to elaborate the influence of object relations in the model of mind that underlies the works we will read.
Recognize the influence of Oedipal issues in the early ego development as presented in these papers.
Continuing Education Contact Hours:
The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. Contact Hours are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking Contact Hours to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and evaluation form, participants will be granted 6 Contact Hours.
