Overlapping Cross-Cultural Meaning in the Play of an Early Adolescent Boy with James Herzog, M.D.

In a treatment of an early adolescent with major dysfunction, it was possible to draw on historical circumstances in both the lives of the patient and the therapist that allowed for the co-construction of a workable play space. Both transmitted trauma and actual experience were accessed in the treatment in such a way as to help the patient represent his pain and find a way to both modulate and transform it. Aspects of the demography and realm of personal meaning of the patient entered the play in a chronology and time frame that he determined. The therapist was able to participate in the manner that his patient designed and thus not interfere in what was evolving. The therapist’s personal history proved to be a facilitative component although it was never disclosed. Both participants learned much in this undertaking
Dr. James Herzog is an Adult and Child Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst. He is an Adult and Child Training and Supervising Analyst at Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and a Supervising Analyst at the Sigmund Freud Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. His areas of work include, play, the transmission of trauma and the role of the father. His book, Father Hunger was published in 2001.

Educational Objectives:
1. This presentation will demonstrate how the therapist’s own history interpenetrates with the patient’s experience and can be used to develop clinical skills in the work with traumatized children and adolescents.
2. Participants will learn about the use of a play space in creating a safe environment where traumatic experience is accessed and as a result, the patient’s suffering is ameliorated.
3. The participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their own clinical experiences with the presenter and the audience.
