A psychoanalytic exploration of writers at work

Dr. Miller will present her ongoing research into best practices and practical strategies used by productive clinical writers. Her theories about how writers enable or disable themselves when approaching and completing projects have been developed in the context of interviews with both productive and stymied clinical authors, and analyses of published papers by psychoanalytically-informed authors who are writing about writing. She is interested in how clinical or psychoanalytic knowledge is produced and transmitted, so that we can better understand how some voices manage to join the discourses of our field, while others end up excluded from them.
Elise Miller is a psychotherapist, college writing instructor, and psychoanalytic literary scholar, whose most recent work on the psychology of writing was published in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Elise won the CORST Essay Prize in applied psychoanalysis two years in a row, and served as a faculty member for a JAPA Netcast on “Writing about Patients.” In addition to consulting with and running writing groups for clinicians, Dr. Miller teaches at Saint Mary’s College of California and in the Fall Program for Freshmen at U.C. Berkeley.
