A contemporary focus on the functioning of the mind, from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory, will be discussed. There will be an emphasis on Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory along with a new appreciation of the ideas of evolutionary biology for understanding the functioning of the mind.
Dr. Buckingham is President of NYPSI and was formerly Director of NYPSI’s Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program. He is also on the faculty of NYPSI and NYU Medical Center.
The Extension Committee welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
Educational Objectives: After attending, participants will be able to
1. Explain contemporary theory in the functioning of the mind, specifically from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory. 2. Identify Charles Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory.
3. Describe how the traditional and contemporary theories interact and how they can be applied to clinical practice.
Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.
