Challenges of Bringing up a Child with Special Needs: A Personal Story

Our meeting will be devoted to a very moving autobiographical account of the complex consequences of bringing up a premature infant with severe disabilities from birth on. The stresses, multiple traumas including many surgeries, and the impact on a sibling and a mate will be described. To navigate such overwhelming experiences with no hope of complete recovery requires an unusual degree of resilience, patience and courage. The sharing of such experiences may be a valuable example of the resources of the human psyche, and also raise awareness and empathy around an issue that faces many.
Dr. Margot Weil is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at NYPSI and received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University. She is part of the parent faculty of Project DOCC (Delivery of Chronic Care) at Mt. Sinai hospital, which is a medical education program designed to improve the quality of life for children who are chronically ill or disabled and their families. At Project DOCC, she educates pediatric residents about the impact of disability and special healthcare needs on a child and his or her family.
