This course presents an overview of current psychoanalytic perspectives on child development. The interaction of constitutional factors and environmental influences on the formation of unconscious fantasy and intrapsychic conflict during the sequential stages of development will be emphasized. Clinical examples will be offered to illustrate the concepts being presented.

Dr. David Sawyer is a member of NYPSI and on the faculty of Weill Cornell-New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Ronald Rawitt is a member of NYPSI and on the faculty of Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The Extension Program welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.

Educational Objectives: After attending, participants will be able to
1. Describe the psychoanalytic nature of developmental phases in childhood: i.e., pre-oedipal, oedipal, latency, and early, middle, and late adolescence.
2. Explain which principles organize development, including progression and fixation, the formation of unconscious fantasies, unconscious conflict, and the influence of parenting and parent psychology in order to recognize clinically significant developmental issues in childhood: separation anxiety, sadomasochism, family romance fantasies, the evolution of narcissism, and object removal.
