Dr. Barbara Milrod, an expert on the psychodynamic understanding of Anxiety and Panic Disorder, will describe and explain the complexities of the current thinking in psychiatry about the diagnosis of Anxiety in school aged children. Various aspects of anxiety will be addressed, including the psychodynamic, developmental, neurochemical, environmental, and cognitive issues that all influence Anxiety and Panic Disorders. There are a variety of ways that professionals treat Anxiety Disorders. Dr. Milrod will help us understand them, and specifically address the important contribution of psychodynamic therapies in helping our anxious children.

Barbara Milrod, M.D. is Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and is on the faculty of both the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the Columbia Psychoanalytic Institute for Treatment and Research. She is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry, and serves on the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Psychology. She is an internationally-recognized expert in the area of clinical trials of psychotherapy outcome, particularly concerning anxiety disorders and psychoanalytic treatments, and has developed and tested an operationalized form of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for panic disorder, for which she has demonstrated efficacy. This continues to be the only psychoanalytic psychotherapy with demonstrated efficacy for an Axis I anxiety disorder. Dr. Milrod has received numerous awards and grants from a number of institutions, including the National Institute of Mental Health and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. She is currently developing and testing a psychoanalytic psychotherapy for non-responders with anxiety disorders and depression with her NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award. She is married to John Markowitz, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University, New York State Psychiatric Institute, and her son, James Koblenzer, is a politics major at Oberlin College.
“Dialogues on…” events are geared towards professionals and parents who are involved with the care of children in the school and home environments. Educators, school administrators, community leaders, grandparents and parents are welcome.
