SAVE THE DATE — OCTOBER 18: A CONFERENCE TO HONOR SYLVIA BRODY, PH.D

In honor of the 100th birthday of Sylvia Brody, Ph.D., the child analytic programs of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine, and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research have organized a confereence to be held October 18, 2014 from 9 am to 3 pm, at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The preeminent contributions of Dr. Brody’s research have dealt with the exploration of a child’s psychological development, and developmental issues will be the focus of this event. When psychoanalysts treat patients who present with biologically based disorders, they do so mindful of how developmental issues affect biology and how biology affects development. Moreover, the treatment recognizes the impact of these disorders on the family organization.

A morning case presentation of a child with a learning disorder will be presented to three analysts conversant with the neuropathology of LD, the value of psychopharmacological interventions, the impact of biological disorders on family dynamics, and the role of psychoanalysis in the treatment of these children, emphasizing the benefits of an approach informed by a psychoanalytic understanding of development.

Panel Participants:

1. Chair — Susan P. Sherkow, M.D.

2. Historical overview of Dr. Brody’s contributions — Sabina E. Preter, M.D. Ph. D.

3. Case Presentation – William H. Braun, Psy.D.

4. Discussants — Jane Asch, M.D., Pamela Meersand, Ph.D. and Lissa Weinstein, Ph.D.

In the afternoon, the participants will be invited to join a workshop of their choice, each of which will address a particular topic conceptualizing the interface between a biologically based disorder and an approach to treatment informed by a psychoanalytic understanding of development. These will include attention-deficit disorders, depression, eating disorders, obsessive -compulsive disorders, and borderline/psychotic disorders. The moderator of each workshop will solicit material and questions from the group. We hope that the workshops will stimulate the formation of post-meeting, ongoing “working parties,” where there can be a continuation of the study of the application of psychoanalysis to biological disorders.
