BION’S CLINICAL SEMINARS IN LOS ANGELES AND NEW YORK CITY

Dr. Aguayo will discuss the only two clinical seminars ever given by Wilfred Bion in the United States: the Los Angeles Seminars and Supervision in 1967; and the IPTAR Seminars in New York City in 1977. The presenter’s interest lies primarily in bringing clinical Bion to the fore and in examining some of Bion’s ground-breaking concepts when he first introduced them in the 1960’s and 70’s. On Friday evening, Dr. Aguayo will take up the clinical and technical implications of Bion’s ideas as he attempted to make these ideas accessible to classically-trained audiences unfamiliar with his work. On Saturday morning a panel of IPTAR analysts who attended Bion’s 1977 seminars will recount their experiences hearing Bion for the first time. Dr. Aguayo will then present case material that highlights Bion’s technique in his work with near psychotic patients.
This Conference is a rare opportunity to learn about Wilfred R. Bion’s historical presentations in Los Angeles and New York. Dr. Aguayo will also present his own clinical notes and interventions to distinguish Bionian interpretations from Kleinian interpretations. In attending this conference you will gain knowledge about Bion’s concepts of “no memory or desire” as well as understanding differences in psychoanalytic technique between Freudian, Kleinian and Bionian perspectives.

Discussion of pre-circulated paper by Dr. Joseph Aguayo of Bion’s seminars in LA and NY. Bion’s recorded voice will be played from tape recorded session vignettes in LA 1967. Dr. Aguayo will facilitate discussion among the participants in attendance.

Clinical Case Presentation: Dr. Aguayo will discuss his own case material and process notes to emphasize specific Bionian interventions in work with near- psychotic patients.
Joseph Aguayo, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at Psychoanalytic Center of California in private practice in West Los Angeles. He holds UCLA doctorates in both Clinical Psychology and European History. A former holder of a number of research fellowships from the IPA’s Research Advisory Board, he has merged his clinical and research interests in numerous publications in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis on the clinical history of Kleinian and Bionian psychoanalysis. His current book (co-edited with B. Malin) is: Bion’s Los Angeles Seminars and Supervision, (Karnac Books, 2013). His most recent paper—on ‘Bion’s Notes on Memory and Desire: Its Initial Clinical Reception in the United States’—is based on archival materials and has just been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. This paper will be presented at both the British and Barcelona Psychoanalytical Societies on 18 and 28 June, 2014. He is also a conference presenter at the International Bion Conference, which will be held in Los Angeles from 23 to 26 October 2014.
