A case of a child who suffers from night terrors

Dr. Anzieu-Premmereur will present the first consultations, sessions with the parents, and a detailed analytic treatment of a five year old boy suffering from night terrors. The rich clinical material will enable us to clarify the theoretical orientation of the treating analyst and to illustrate the relevance of the theory and its application to the formulation of interpretations. Dr. Anna Balas will offer a preliminary discussion of the case.
Christine Anzieu-Premmereur, M.D., Ph.D. is Director of the Parent-Infant Psychotherapy Training Program at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is a member of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris and of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine and is Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Columbia University. Dr. Anzieu is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the IPA. She has a private practice in New York as an adult and child psychoanalyst. She also consults with parents and babies. She has published two books in French, on play in child psychotherapy and on psychoanalytic interventions with parents and babies, and is the author of a number of book chapters and papers in English on motherhood, maternal functioning and child development, symbolization process in childhood, and techniques of intervention in early childhood.
Anna Balas, M.D. is currently Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Division of New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College. She is also on the faculty of, and a member of, the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. Dr. Balas is a sought after instructor on trauma and child development for psychoanalytic candidates, residents, public/private school teachers and parents. In addition, Dr. Balas has a longstanding interest in psychoanalysis as applied to the arts. Dr. Balas has a busy private practice for adult, adolescent and child psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Manhattan.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.
Educational Objectives: Attendees will be able to
1) Describe the French theory of the psychosomatic school and how this explains the attainment of the capacity to dream
2) Describe how insight is communicated to a child of five years.
