The Analyst’s Personality: Impact on the Theory of Psychoanalytic Technique

A theory of technique explains what to do about the nature of what we understand the clinical data to mean. It is our premise that as a result of personal conflict, psychoanalysts are attracted to particular technical maxims; or develop theories of technique, to counter or reverse their own destructive anti-therapeutic proclivities. This idea illustrates a general principle in the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge. Fleck (1935), maintained that scientific theories are influenced by social, cultural, historical, psychological and personal factors. We will illustrate this using Freud, and three other analysts (H. Kohut, M. Klein, K. Horney) as case examples.

Arthur A. Lynch, Ph.D. is President of the Board of Directors, Senior Faculty member, and Training and Supervising Analyst at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University School of Social Works. Dr. Lynch has authored and co-authored numerous articles on psychoanalysis. Additionally, he is a biannual visiting professor at Wuhan Hospital for Psychotherapy.
Arlene Kramer Richards, Ed.D. is a psychoanalyst and a poet. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst with the New York Freudian Society and the International Psychoanalytic Association as well as a Fellow of IPTAR. She is currently on the faculty at the Contemporary Freudian Society and Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China.
Arnold Richards, M.D. was Editor of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 1994 to 2003 and before that was an Editor of The American Psychoanalyst. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, a member of the American Psychological Association Division 39, Section 1, and a member of the Contemporary Freudian Society. He is also a biannual visiting professor at Wuhan Hospital for Psychotherapy.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.
Educational Objectives: Attendees will be able to
1. Describe the relationship between Klein, Kohut and Horney’s personal blind spots and the theory that enabled these therapists to overcome them.
