Anthony Bass:

THE DIALOGUE OF UNCONSCIOUSES, MUTUAL ANALYSIS AND CONTEMPORARY RELATIONAL TECHNIQUE

Dr. Bass will discuss some of the origins of contemporary relational technique in Sándor Ferenczi’s experiments in mutual analysis, as described in his 1932 Clinical Diary. Tony will explore the view, originally suggested by Ferenczi, of psychoanalysis as a ‘dialogue of unconsciouses,’ in which both analyst and patient ‘broadcast’ and ‘receive’ unconscious communications from the other. He will consider how this bidirectional process, fundamental to the shaping of a therapeutic transference/countertransference field is utilized to enrich psychoanalytic practice, while furthering each analyst’s own personal analytic self explorations as a natural part of attempting to grasp the experience of her patient.
