A contemporary focus on the functioning of the mind, from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory, will be discussed. There will be an emphasis on Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory along with a new appreciation of the ideas of evolutionary biology for understanding the functioning of the mind.

Dr. Buckingham is President of NYPSI and was formerly Director of NYPSI’s Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program. He is also on the faculty of NYPSI and NYU Medical Center.

The Extension Committee welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.

Educational Objectives: After attending, participants will be able to
1. Explain contemporary theory in the functioning of the mind, specifically from the perspective of Modern Conflict Theory.
2. Describe Charles Brenner’s revisions of traditional structural theory.
