THE ADOLESCENT NEUROSIS IN FACT AND FICTION

Dr. Theodore Jacobs will discuss and read from his novel The Year of Durocher and his paper “The Adolescent Neurosis” to illustrate the subject of his presentation: the enduring impact of adolescence on the adult personality and, specifically, the contributions of the various stages of adolescence to symptom formation and character development. Many adults remain in the grip of adolescent conflicts, a hold which can be loosened through understanding the struggles, traumas, and specific satisfactions of the early and mid-adolescent years. Dr. Jacobs will describe his clinical work with several patients and will welcome clinical contributions from participants. This workshop will be particularly useful to those who work with adolescents and with adults.
THEODORE J. JACOBS, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Training and Supervising Analyst at The New York Psychoanalytic Institute and The Institute for Psychoanalytic Education. He is the author of The Use of the Self: Countertransference and Communication in the Analytic Situation, The Year of Durocher and the forthcoming book, The Possible Profession: The Analytic Process and The Process of Change. He has published short fiction in Harpers Magazine, Humor from Harpers, Mutiny Magazine, and Martha Foley’s Best Short Stories of the Year.

FEE: $50 includes breakfast (no fee to MCMH staff)
$30 Student Fee (includes breakfast), with proof of student status

MITPP, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers three certificate programs: a three year program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Adults, a two year program in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and a program leading to New York State licensure in Psychoanalysis for those with Masters Degrees who don’t qualify for licensure in the established mental health professions. Social Workers may qualify for the LCSW through their training at MITPP. Matriculants see patients at the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, which is licensed by the Office of Mental Health. MITPP’s low tuition of $1,000 per semester includes all supervision and coursework. Courses are also offered on a non-matriculated basis.
Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2014 semester.
