Francois Truffaut’s “The Green Room” deals with the main character’s inability to come to terms with the death of his young wife. The movie was inspired by a number of short stories by Henry James including The Beast in the Jungle and The Altar of the Dead. As with other movies by Truffaut, there is a strong autobiographical element. After the screening, Drs. Charon and Baudry will discuss the complex ramifications of the film’s main themes.
Participants:
Francis Baudry, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. He has written extensively on applied analysis including papers on Flaubert, Keats, James Joyce and Faulkner. In addition, he has written articles on such movies as “Mr. Klein” and “The Dead.” For seventeen years Dr. Baudry ran an interdisciplinary group on Literature and Psychoanalysis for NYPSI’s Extension Program.
Rita Charon, M.D., Ph.D. is a general internist and literary scholar at Columbia University who writes on the works of Henry James. She is founder and Executive Director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia. Her research focuses on the consequences of narrative medicine practice, reflective clinical practice, and health care team effectiveness. At Columbia, Charon is Professor of Clinical Medicine, Director of the Narrative and Social Medicine Scholarly Concentration Track, Director of Faculty Development for the Division of General Medicine, and Director of the Columbia/Macy Interprofessional Education Project. She has received a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio residency, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and research funding from NIH, NEH, and several private foundations.
Charon served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Literature and Medicine from 2000 to 2007. She lectures widely on narrative medicine and is published in such journals of medicine and literary studies as The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Narrative, Henry James Review, and Literature and Medicine. She is the author of Narrative Medicine: Honoring the Stories of Illness (Oxford University Press, 2006) and co-editor of Stories Matter: The Role of Narrative in Medical Ethics (Routledge, 2002) and Psychoanalysis and Narrative Medicine (SUNY Press, 2008). Dr. Charon received her M.D. from Harvard and Ph.D. in English Literature from Columbia, concentrating on the works of Henry James.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.
