Dear Colleagues,
This Veteran’s Day weekend, you may have time to read the posts on the international psychoanalytic website in more detail. If so, the richness of the posts will be even more evident as it was for me. Historic events weave their way onto the website – from mental health parity of today to book burning in 1938. Please leave your comments and opinions on the website as you read.
My choices of interest include:
1) There are a large number of Announcements of events of interest which I suggest you scan in the event that you can attend.

2) Babies Eyes and Autism – though listed in the Audio/Video category, I urge you to read the article in the NYT on a study in which researchers used eye-tracking technology in babies.

4) On the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht there are a number of posts related to the event:
a) *The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan: A Boy Avenger, a Nazi Diplomat, and a Murder in Paris* by Jonathan Kirsch
By Scott Martelle,August 09, 2013
On the morning of Nov. 7, 1938, a troubled teenager walked into an embassy in Paris, lied his way past some rather nonchalant guards, was granted a private meeting with an attache and then shot the man dead. The boy was Jewish, the victim was a low-level Nazi diplomat, and the killing was quickly seized upon by Hitler and his agents of darkness to accelerate their campaign to drive Jews from Germany. Within hours of the attache*s death, Hitler unleashed the infamous Kristallnacht, or *night of broken glass,* a rather poetic name for a savage orgy of murder, rape, arson and vandalism in which more than 200 Jews were killed, 1,300 synagogues were burned and 7,500 Jewish-owned shops were attacked.
Author and critic Jonathan Kirsch dives into the events leading up to Kristallnacht in *The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan,* bringing to life a forgotten slice of history * not Kristallnacht but Grynszpan, the teenager who inadvertently sparked it.

b) a number of posts on the presence and loss of the Yiddish culture and language including a moving chapter by Dr. Arnold Richards: ” Witnessing the death of Yiddish language and culture: Holes in the Doorposts In: The Power of Witnessing: Reflections, Reverberations, and Traces of the Holocaust: Trauma, Psychoanalysis, and the Living Mind, ed. Nancy R. Goodman & Marilyn B. Meyers.

c) there was also an anniversary event at the Leo Baeck Institute which unfortunately was on Nov. 7, but I list it anyway and hope that some of you may have attended.

5) the two posts on the Editorials category go together in my mind. The first is on What Memories Are Made , the second about a Man Who Loved Cemeteries. My mother told me that she an a girl friend would study long evening and night time hours in the local cemetery because it was beautiful and quiet. It all makes me wonder about our memories – read and decide.

LVI. November Poetry Monday: Sharon Olds and Mary Jo Salter
Two recent poetry collections * one in 2012 and one just released * deal with a topic that should be of particular interest to our readers, both professionally, because so many of you are
psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, but also personally, because so many have experienced it. The topic is divorce, which in past years, reflecting prevailing cultural attitudes, was not often discussed publicly. Divorce was viewed as failure, rather than success in fixing what was broken, and divorced people, especially divorced women, as flawed.
