Recurrent themes: Govt. breakdowns, antisemitism, fear of snakes from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear Colleagues,

There are good news (the Red Sox win) and then there are bad news (more shooting – at the LA airport). In between is the specter of the Affordable Health Care and what this means. As we mull over these and similar worldwide issues, let us take a brief pause and turn to the international psychoanalytic website this weekend and apply our psychoanalytic understanding to the posts this week. As usual I list my own choices and urge you to find yours in the full menu that follows.

My list (and as usual I get caught up in the BOOK section):

1) Please note the large # of announcements, incl. “Battling the Life and Death Forces of Sadomasochism” with Harriet Basseches et al. at CFS DC” which  took place Sunday, 11/3/13.

2) Psychology and Fascism:

a)Daniel Pick on Psychoanalysis and Fascism
Click Here to Read This Article

An intellectual and cultural history of the encounter between psychology and fascism, The Pursuit of the Nazi Mind draws on neglected archive sources in Britain and the US, as well as literature, film, legal testimony, letters and memoirs, to map the rise and fall of psychoanalytic and psychiatric explanations of the Third Reich, highlighting the clinical ambition to transform mysterious “Nazi monsters” into plausible, individual “case studies.”

b) Review of Jack El-Hai*s *The Nazi and the Psychiatrist,*

c) Review of “the Devil that Never Dies”- antisemitism by another name – with an excellent letter from Dr. Henry F. Friedman to the NYT book Review.

I recommend these to those interested in history and psychoanalysis.

3) Please listen to Transference Presentation by Arnold Richards in Wuhan, China.

4) Though it probably requires two readings, I recommend an excellent essay on Lacan*s Anamorphic Object: Beneath Freud*s Unheimlich by Athena V. Colman in the Papers Category.

5) Fear of snakes may be hardwired despite what our psychoanalytic view may be. Please read: The Monkey and the Snake.

6) Turn to Science when in despair: Can science stop government shutdowns? This is an interesting point of view.

This week’s posts were particularly focused on the recurring historical patterns such as government breakdowns, war strategies, anti-semitism or survival of the fittest ( as in the evolution of fear of snakes). I hope you found them interesting and brought your own thoughts to the screen in your comments on the website.
