Dr. Morris’s interest in Horton Foote’s work led to her contacting the playwright and having a meaningful correspondence with him in his later years. She will elaborate on his characters’ psychodynamics, which are themes that Foote focused on and emphasized repeatedly throughout his writing career. In “The Trip to Bountiful,” they include: longing for an idealized past, marital disappointment due to parental over- control and disapproval, ambivalent parent-child relations, unexplained infertility and mysterious illness, chronic depression, and mourning over death in early childhood. Foote’s plots and naturalistic dialogues made his plays compelling, true-to-life, and greatly admired by audiences and performers alike.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.
Muriel Gold Morris, M.D., is a psychoanalyst in private practice and a member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. Dr. Morris serves as Chair of the A.A. Brill Library and on the Intake Committee of the NYPSI Treatment Center. She teaches courses at NYPSI on Psychosomatic Pathology, Eating Disorders, and Psychological Themes in the Work of Jane Austen. Her interests in family pathology, infertility, and adoption have become popular lectures on the works of Horton Foote and Edward Albee. Her publications include “Psychoanalytic and Literary Perspectives on Procreation Conflicts in Women” (Psychoanalytic Review, February 1997) and a recent paper “Denial of Fatality in Cases of Eating Disorders” was presented at the American Psychoanalytic Association in January 2013. Dr. Morris graduated from Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research.
Educational Objectives: Participants can benefit from this discussion by learning more about how psychoanalytic knowledge can be used to gain more understanding of popular and familiar dramatic works that are in the public domain, but have been neglected in terms of deserving more exploration in depth.
