Married for almost 50 years, Grant’s (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona’s (Julie Christie) commitment to each other appears unwavering. Their daily life is filled with tenderness and humor; yet this serenity is broken by Fiona’s increasingly evident memory loss – and her restrained references to a past betrayal. For a while, the couple is able to casually dismiss these unwelcome changes. But when neither Fiona nor her husband can deny any longer that she is being consumed by Alzheimer’s disease, the couple is forced to wrenchingly redefine the limits of their love and loyalty – and face the complex, inevitable transition from lovers to strangers.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the audience about the film, and its exploration of the impact of dementia on the self and its relationships.

Discussants:

Anne-Marie Levine is a former concert pianist; the author of three collections of poetry: Euphorbia, Bus Ride to a Blue Movie, and Oral History, as well as Reculer Pour Mieux Sauter, an artists book forthcoming as a boxed set. She has written on Gertrude Stein’s politics, and on trauma and art; and is a maker of digital prints, box art and miniature paintings on wood.

Matthew von Unwerth is a psychotherapist in private practice, and an advanced candidate at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and in its child and adolescent psychotherapy (CAP) program. He is affiliated with the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, and on the faculties of the Metropolitan Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training, and the China American Psychoanalytic Association. He is the author of Freud’s Requiem: Memory, Mourning and the Invisible History of a Summer Walk (Riverhead/ Penguin), as well as numerous articles and essays, and serves as Director of the Abraham A. Brill Library of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute.
