Jeremy Safran:
AGENCY & SURRENDER IN THE ANALYTIC PROCESS

There is a vital dialectic between agency and surrender in life and in the psychoanalytic process. Without an ability to will one cannot choose one’s actions; one becomes a passive victim of circumstances rather than an agent who can influence one’s own destiny. On the other hand, an exaggerated sense of agency fails to take into account the limits of our ability to control life, and can be associated with a type of narcissistic omnipotence that can lead to bitterness and cynicism. Consistent with a bias in Western culture towards individualism and autonomy, psychoanalytic theory has tended to emphasize the importance of agency at the expense of surrender. In this paper building upon the work of Sándor Ferenczi, Michael Balint, Donald Winnicott & Emmanuel Ghent I will explore ways of redressing this imbalance by considering the role that surrender can play in the analytic process and the development of the capacity for intersubjectivity.
