Frequency of Sessions: A Variable in Psychoanalytic Treatment

Abstract: The question of how many sessions per week has been a touchy subject of debate within the Analytic Training Institutes in order to be classified as a psychoanalysis. In current times the issue has become a smoldering undercurrent, and a theme better left untouched.

The 1997 Panel at the American Psychoanalytic Meetings raised the issue as to what, if any is there significant qualitative difference among the sequence of one-two-three-four five-six times a week psychoanalysis. Though, statistical validation is lacking to support the decision regarding the most efficacious number of sessions per week, it is the author’s belief that frequent sessions –three- four – five times per week are a prerequisite for a psychoanalysis. The author , reviews both historical and current literature from various theoretical positions to show that the aim of treatment, that of, working through the resistance, resolving the transference requires an intensive quantity of time in-order to reach a “moment to moment “ emotional and cognitive understanding of latent meanings..

Clinical vignettes are presented to help explicate the author’s premises.
