How do analysts engage the problem and the promise of evidence in clinical work? What counts as evidence and why? For whom? And to what purpose?

Clinicians and researchers have struggled with these questions for decades, questions that go to the very heart of the clinical endeavor. This two-day conference will explore how analysts conceptualize clinical data in the immediacy of the consulting room. Using detailed process notes from a single case, panelists and audience will actively participate in a conversation regarding questions of evidence in psychoanalysis. Break out groups will facilitate in-depth reflections on the case and the larger issues that are the topic of this exciting conference.

The Conference will be structured around process notes from two sessions of the 4th year of an analysis conducted by an anonymous analyst. On Saturday morning we will work with the notes from one session followed by break out groups; on Saturday afternoon we’ll work with notes from the second session. Panelists will hear the material at the same time the audience does, keeping the process presentation as natural and lively as possible and best resembling the way an analyst would encounter it in the consulting room.

On Sunday morning we will begin with break out groups following up on Saturday’s work. To conclude we will reconvene to discuss and collate our work highlighting points of convergence and points of divergence.
