Working in the Shadow of Rupture: Clinical encounters with the ‘dead mother’

In this paper, drawing on clinical material, Dr. Harris examines the particular vicissitudes in treatments when something disrupts the analyst’s subjectivity. The past few decades have seen the emergence of many new ideas about countertransference and intersubjectivity, and a growing sense, across many orientations, that there is a deep porousness and bidirectionality of affective streams and experiences between analyst and analysand. She will consider the impact of the analyst’s experience of rupture and loss on the analytic pair.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.
Educational Objectives: After attending, participants will be able to
1. understand ways in which disruptions in the analyst’s function enter the bi-personal field with implications for clinical action.
2. distinguish melancholic responses to loss from acts of mourning and working through.
