Same sex marriage, Newtown, Lincoln, Freud & Mussolini from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear colleagues:

this has been yet another “stormy” week, weather wise and politically wise, especially in APsaA I write you with a 2 foot blanket of snow outside my window and it seems only apt to be reading the wonderful material on the international website. As always, many of the posts reflect the climate.

My suggestions this week include:

1) The Impact of Learning Disorders and ADD on Psychological Development*** with Josephine Wright, M.D. at NYPSI may be the most relevant announcement to the multitude of problems that are surfacing in the US schools related to violence and death. If you are able to attend, please let us know if my hypothesis is a stretch.

2) From homophobia to same sex marriage – amazing that we are witnessing this progress in our life time while other areas of life seem to be arcane.

3) Please note the phenomenal IPTAR list of authors on every conceivable psychoanalytic subject.

4) Please read the rather “novel” idea of how to change minds AFTER NEWTOWN.

5) Please read and compare/contrast the couple of remarkable posts on Abraham Lincoln!

6) Similarly remarkable is the post on Freud to Mussolini!

7) And then there are our modern soldiers – with PTSD and frequent suicide Please refer to 4),

5) & 6) above – clearly the juxtapositions are not accidental.

8) Please note the important post on: Listening to a Child: Film Screening and Discussion of 21 Up South Africa: Mandela’s Children Our managing editor, Nathan Szajnberg wilt be participating .

9) I can’t tell whether the article on the Global Temperatures is a positive or a negative one. – Guess it depends on whether you are an optimist or a pessimist. You decide.

XII. Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death by Norman Straker
Meet the Author and Editor Norman Straker MD of`Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death: A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Treatments

Have you ever contemplated the possibility of facing cancer and death? Probably everyone over thirty has occasionally, and as we age, these thoughts are more common. Despite these routine occurrences, death is rarely a subject of public or private discourse. Psychoanalysts, psychiatrists and therapists, rarely explore** ***death anxiety*** in their therapies. Doctors, also need help facing death, so they can more routinely inform each person of the best options at the end of life rather than avoid the topic and continue to prescribe futile treatments.

***on the Schrift and Charakter website. This post letter is in German.
Here is the English Translation of the German:
The existence of that dedication as well as the specific circumstance of its creation have been knows for a while. Ernest Jones report: ***A consultation which Freud held that month [the footnotes are missing] had interesting consequences a few years later: Weiss referred to a complicated patient from Rome who was treated by him. She was accompanied by her father, who happened to be a close friend of Mussolini. He asked Freud to donate one of his works to Mussolini and also to write a few words in the book; Freud agreed for the sake of Weiss. He selected the book ***Warum Krieg?*** [Why War?], which he had written together with Einstein and on the cover sheet with a reference to the archeological excavations sponsored by Mussolini, he wrote the following words: ***From an old man who recognizes the dictator as a cultural hero.*** [the transcription is wrong, Machthaber is not dictator, it is a potentate, the best rendition of literally, the holder of power]
