A Taste of Laplanche, Jonathan House, M.D.
Outside of the Anglophone universe, the work of Jean Laplanche is recognized as offering an important theory of the nature and genesis of infantile sexuality. Within our language community, most of Laplanche’s work is unknown. Even colleagues who place their theorizing in relation to his, often understand Laplanche in terms of his early work rather than the work of the last 30 years. This is understandable as, until last year, nothing written after 1993 had been translated. This talk attempts to introduce Laplanche’s central concepts.
Dr. House worked as a cab driver, a truck driver and a short-order cook before becoming a physician. He first specialized in internal medicine but left clinical practice to work full-time for the labor movement; after a decade, he returned to medicine re-specializing as a psychiatrist and then as a psychoanalyst. He is a Training Analyst at both Columbia and IPE. Dr. House is also on the faculty of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. He serves on the Conseil Scientifique of Fondation Laplanche. He is the co-translator of the most recent collection of Laplanche’s writings, “Freud and the Sexual” published by Unconscious in Translation, a new publishing house where Jonathan is the General Editor.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.
