Marion Oliner makes a unique contribution to the topic of psychoanalysis, personal history and trauma. As a victim of the holocaust, having endured severe trauma as a child, Oliner first narrates her own experiences then, assisted by her clinical experience as an analyst, examines the complex processes through which traumatic memories are subject to assimilation by unconscious omnipotent fantasies. This process helps free the patient from imagined responsibility and guilt for these traumatic events. Oliner differentiates the state in which the individual meets the danger and survives, from later memories of the trauma and the role of the analyst as empathic listener. The influence of external reality on psychic reality is also explored.
Dr. Oliner will be interviewed by Drs. Francis Baudry and Gail Reed. A book signing will follow.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.
Marion M. Oliner, Ph.D. is active in private practice, teaching, supervising, as a speaker, and as a member of many committees. As well, she is involved with the governance of New York Freudian Society, which accepted her to membership in 1970. Recently she chaired the Ethics Committee and developed a course that has been widely accepted as a required course for licensing. She is a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association, and on the faculty of the New York Freudian Society (renamed Contemporary Freudian Society), the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, and the Metropolitan Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
Educational Objectives:
(1) to appreciate how trauma is experienced
(2) to understand the reworking of the memories
(3) to understand the special skills required of the analyst to help these patients
