Synopsis: of Bill Fried’s Presentation

“Gods and Monsters” is a thought provoking biographical study of James Whale, the Director of “Frankenstein”, “the Bride of Frankenstein” and ironically? “Showboat”. His story illustrates a number of psychoanalytic topics of individual and interpersonal relevance. The film is on one level a comedy about death, on another, about Whale’s internal dynamics and their influence on his relationship with a heterosexual homophobic man who is his gardener.

“Gaiety” in the title, of my presentation refers, in part, to the implication that the best approach to things that cause dread is the combination of creativity, laughter, and love divested of sentimentality. “Transfiguring” takes note of the innumerable metamorphoses involved in the creation of monsters, movies, states of consciousness, external appearances and emotions.

The film is a serious and subtle exploration of the ways in which Thanatos merges with the more life affirming elements of experience to produce the ambiguities, paradoxes, and ironies by which the human condition gains representation.
