We invite you to our Jan. 17, 2013 Discussion Group on loneliness and aloneness at the Waldorf Astoria, NYC. The psychoanalytic literature provides many theories about loneliness. Dr. Arthur Lynch will present a clinical case of a psychoanalytic patient who suffered with painful loneliness. How Dr. Lynch recognized and understood his patient’s loneliness and the defenses that kept it in place, will be highlighted. The participants in the course of the discussion will consider what drove the patient’s loneliness. Different theories of loneliness will be referred to as we distinguish between loneliness and solitude. Interpretations that might help a person to move beyond her/his loneliness will be considered as they apply to this patient and perhaps to some other patients whom we treat. Dr. Arlene Kramer Richards will lead the discussion.
